Workforce Education

ABC of Wisconsin offers a wide variety of workforce education in a variety of formats.  From traditional classes, to online training, to customized in-house training, there is something for everyone. Please contact the Training Department at 800-829-9926 or 608-244-6056 for more information on any of the classes listed below. 

Workforce Education Calendar

Introduction to Blueprint Reading (8-16 hours)

Covers the basics of blueprint reading, including related documents, such as specifications addendums, shop drawings, and change orders. It will provide an understanding of the progression from floor plans to shop drawings. The course also covers understanding and interpreting specifications. Approved for 12 hours of Dwelling Contractor Qualifier (DCQ) certification CEUs.

Construction Math (4-16 hours)

Designed to meet the needs of your employees and they will learn the practical construction math they need to work on your projects.  

Available as a Customized In-House Class.

Basic Stair Layout (6-8 HOurs)  

Describes the various code requirements for stairs; focuses on the techniques for measuring and calculating the rise, run and stairwell openings, laying out stringers and fabricating basic stairways. 

Available as a Customized In-House Class.

Roof Assemblies (4-6 hours)

Covers the installation of truss roof systems; proper bracing; and applying sheathing.  

Available as a Customized In-House Class.

Building Materials, Fasteners and Adhesives
(4-8 hours) 

Provides an overview of building materials used in construction work, including lumber, sheet goods, engineered wood products, structural concrete and structural steel; also describes the various fasteners and adhesives used in construction work. 

Available as a Customized In-House Class.

Hand and Power Tools (4-8 hours)
  
Provides detailed descriptions of hand tools and portable power tools used by carpenters and other construction workers.  Emphasis is on safe and proper operation of tools as well as care and maintenance.

Available as a Customized In-House Class.

Floor System Framing (6-8 hours) 

Covers framing basics as well as the procedures for laying out and constructing a wood floor assembly using common lumber and engineered building materials; it also includes a general review of the components of wood floor assemblies. 

Available as a Customized In-House Class.

Wall Framing (6-8 hours)

Describes the process of laying out and framing wall assemblies including rough-ins for door and window openings; constructing corner and partition components; bracing walls; and applying sheathing.  

Available as a Customized In-House Class.

Thermal and Moisture Management (6-18 hours)  

Course covers the selection and installation of various types of insulating materials in walls, floors and attics; the uses and installation practices for vapor retarders (barriers) and waterproofing materials.  It pays particular attention to emerging wall and roof assemblies’ strategies and their application on today’s jobsites.

Digital Photography (8-24 hours)

Digital photography has become an important facet of the construction industry, from documentation, to training, to the presentation of completed projects. Choosing proper equipment to balance your photographic and budgetary needs to obtain the best results and understanding how to operate the equipment is all covered.

Available as a Traditional Class.

Welding (16-32 hours)

Designed completely around the needs of your employees, regardless of welding experience. Enhance your experience using the Welding Simulators at the ABC of Wisconsin Training Center. 

The instructor contracts separately for welding certifications. Training schedule is based on availability of the instructor.

Heavy Equipment Simulator Training (4-32 hours)

Come to the ABC of Wisconsin Training Center and learn proper techniques on one of our simulators. Learn machine controls and safety in virtual jobsite situations.  Simulators include:
  • Excavator
  • Back Hoe
  • Crawler Dozer
  • Motor Grader
  • Wheel Loader
  • Mobile Telescopic Boom Crane

How to Use  a Tape Measure Online training (1 hour) 

This interactive online class was designed by industry experts and covers: 
  • Measuring tools in construction
  • Selecting, caring for, and safe use of a tape measure
  • Adding and simplifying fractions
  • Reading and using a tape measure with real life examples

SERV Tech Talks (0.5 hour/26 modules)

SERV Tech Talks was developed specifically for construction industry service managers as an in-house self-paced communication tool they can use with their technicians.  Similar to how tool box talks take place, this training is done by a manager with the help of a service manager’s binder & technician pages.  

Tech Talks consists of 26 modules, broken into four general categories:
  • Customer Service
  • Leadership
  • Professionalism
  • Time & Material Management
Available as a Customized In-House Class.

Field Leader (2-6 hours)

Field leader training is for those who are stepping into or have been in the role of supervising others. Field Leader is offered as in-house or traditional formats.

Available as a Traditional Class and as a Customized In-House Class.

Supervisory Training (8 hours)

Each Spring, a day-long training is held that focuses on helping the next generation of leaders learn fundamental supervisory training.  

Available as a Traditional Class.

Critical Skills (2 hours/6 modules)

Critical skills are six different interrelated two-hour soft skills training programs developed specifically for the construction and construction service industry.  Each of the six programs covers key workforce issues facing contractors today.  Critical Skills is offered as in-house, a self-guided training program for your staff, and in traditional formats.

ACI Concrete Flatwork Technician and Finisher Course & Certification Test
(8-16 hours)

Give your employees the training and certification they need to be better finishers.  Certification testing through the American Concrete Institute verifies the skills of your crew to potential customers along with meeting requirements for certain projects.  Choose from either the Technician or the Finsher certification depending on experience.

Available as a Traditional Class and as a Customized In-House Class.

Medical Gas Certification (32 hours)

With the Medical Gas Certification, you will be certified as an as ASSE/6010 Medical Gas System Installers/Brazers with NFPA99, 2012 Compliance.  This allows you to do  the brazing work for medical gas systems as required on the project specs for hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient clinics, orthopedic offices, dental offices, or veterinarian/humane society offices.

Registered Electrician CEU Classes
(5 sessions/ 5 hours each)

These classes have been specifically designed for the Registered Electrician looking to complete his or her continuing education hours.  Each of the 5 classes consist of 2 sessions, each 2.5 hours long. Take all of the classes and you will complete the 24 hours of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) required for the year.

Class topics include: 
  • Electrical Safety
  • Electrical Theory--Foundations
  • Electrical Theory--Circuits and Ohm’s Law
  • Alternating Current
  • National Electrical Code Review
Although these classes are designed for the registered electrician, these classes are approved for CEU hours for journeyworkers and masters and for Unpaid Related Instruction Hours for apprentices.

Residential Wiring (24-48 hours)

Designed for residential wiremen, apprentices, and journeymen with hands-on activities, the residential wiring class will use the National Electrical Code to locate answers to common questions.  Learners will calculate allowable lighting, feeder circuits, branch circuits, and service loads. 

Available as a Traditional Class.

Commercial Wiring (24-48 hours) 

Designed for the commercial electrician, this class will cover working on the initial installation or modifying or repairing an existing installation, reading plans,  interpret specs, and determine circuit loads. with hands-on activities.  Based around the National Electrical Code.

Industrial Wiring & Motor Controls (21-42 hours)

This class will be using the National Electrical Code to exploring the fundamentals of Industrial Wiring and Motor Controls -- from installing new electrical services and changeovers from old systems to project planning, maintenance procedures, and motor controls.  

Available as a Traditional Class.

Journeyman & Master Exam Prep (12-24 hours)

Review the National Electrical Code while reviewing electrical prinicpals to solve exam-type questions. 

Available as a Traditional Class and as a Customized In-House Class.

Journeyman & Master Exam Practice (4 hours)

Practice taking the electrical exam by reviewing the National Electrical Code book, taking a 25 question practical exam, and reviewing. 

Available as a Traditional Class and as a Customized In-House Class.

Electrical Seminars (2-8 hours)

Classes are offered on a variety of topics to help electricians complete their continuing education requirements.  Topics include (but not limited to):
  • Grounding & Bonding
  • Code Update 
  • Electrical Calculations
  • 1 & 2 Family Dwellings 
  • Fire Alarms
  • Photovoltaics
Available as a Traditional Class and as a Customized In-House Class.

JADE Learning Online Training (4-24 hours)

ABC of Wisconsin Apprenticeship and Training Trust and JADE Learning have partnered to provide approved online electrical continuing education unit (CEUs) courses.  These courses are approved for apprentice unpaid hours and CEUs for registered electricians, journeyman and master electricians.

Plumbing Seminars (2-8 hours)

Classes are offered on a variety of topics to help plumbers complete their continuing education requirements.  

Available as a Traditional Class and as a Customized In-House Class.

Plumbing Journeyman or Master Exam Prep (6-24 hours)

Review the plumbing code and test taking strategies to help pass the exam.  

Available as a Traditional Class and as a Customized In-House Class.
Sprinkler Fitting Seminars (2-8 hours)

Classes are offered on a variety of topics to help sprinkler fitters complete their continuing education requirements.  

Available as a Traditional Class and as a Customized In-House Class.
