If you’ve met Jacob Moody, you know how passionate he is about the construction industry. His motivation to continue learning earned him a gold medal last March at the ABC National Craft Championships (NCC) in Long Beach, CA. The atmosphere was very festive as the Associated Builders and Contractors of Wisconsin recognized its apprentices during a recent Graduation Banquet. I’ve attended many commencement ceremonies over the past couple of decades, and none was more emotional than this one. What two legislative wins for apprenticeship means for Wisconsin contractors

Associated Builders and Contractors of Wisconsin scored two decisive legislative victories this spring, as Gov. Scott Walker signed two bills into law that will help address the skilled labor gap. The ABC-backed measures reduce the state’s journeymen-to-apprentice ratios to 1-to-1 for all construction trades and allows qualified high school students to enter into adult apprenticeship programs during their senior year. The hard truths about soft skills

The construction industry relies on the strength of its workers -- not the physical strength -- but strength of character.  Employers need engaged employees who put in an honest day’s effort every day. 

ABC of Wisconsin’s online training partner, Penn Foster, recently conducted a survey of employers in the hospitality, retail, and restaurant industries.  Although, the survey did not cover construction, the results are universal, regardless of the industry. Read the rest of entry »

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Wisconsin Apprenticeship is marking 30 years of service to the construction industry today. That's longer than most apprentices have been alive. This being "Workforce Week," it's a good time to share with you a feature on a current apprentice, Andy Lensink, with De Troye Electric Service, Inc., Oostburg, and a gold medal winner at the 2017 National Craft Competition. Andy, 33, had a good childhood, raise in the small town of Oostburg. His mom did secretary work and his dad worked at the post office. He liked playing sports and building model cars and then messing around ...

Improving economy provides benefits and poses challenges

The latest economic update from ABC National shows construction employment on the rise for the beginning 2017. The data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows a half percent increase in employment growth, or 36,000 net jobs in January 2017, the strongest it has been in 10 months.

ABC of Wisconsin Applauds Rural Wisconsin Workforce Development Initiative

On Wednesday, state Reps. Romaine Quinn (Rice Lake) and Scott Krug (Nekossa) released the details of the Rural Wisconsin Workforce Development Initiative. The plan seeks to further encourage partnerships between local businesses, K-12 schools and area technical colleges to prepare the next generation's workforce.
