ABC of Wisconsin Apprentices Shine at National Craft Championships

Two Wisconsin apprentices were given top awards at the 29th annual Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) National Craft Championships this past week, held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The competition, which occurred March 2-3, had more than 200 apprentices from 32 different states contending for gold, silver and bronze medals in 15 competitions across 13 crafts.

Wisconsin Apprentices to Compete at ABC National Craft Championships

This year’s event will feature competitors from 32 states, including Wisconsin, and the largest number of participants in the event’s 29-year history. The annual National Craft Championships were first held in Orlando, Florida in 1987.

OSHA Penalties Will Increase Significantly in 2016

Although few people noticed, the recently signed federal budget deal will significantly increase OSHA fines. Congress has directed OSHA to author rules that increase its penalties to account for current inflation levels, which would raise proposed fines 70-80 percent.

Confined Spaces in Construction

On May 4, 2015, OSHA issued a new standard for construction work in confined spaces, which will be effective starting August 3, 2015. Confined spaces can present physical and atmospheric hazards that can be avoided if they are recognized and addressed prior to entering these spaces to perform work.

Governor Proclaims May as Building Safety Month

Governor Scott Walker has proclaimed May 2015, as Building Safety Month throughout Wisconsin. The Alliance for Regulatory Coordination, with support from the League of Wisconsin Municipalities, requested the proclamation to help raise awareness of the importance of building safety and to recognize the countless lives that have been saved due to the implementation of safety codes by state and municipal agencies in Wisconsin.
