Job Description
HVAC technicians install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems. These systems allow people to control the air temperature inside structures. There are different kinds of HVAC systems, such as oil-fired furnaces and commercial refrigerators, and technicians can specialize within the trade. HVAC technicians must be able to understand the operating principals of different systems and to interpret written specifications. Experienced HVAC technicians expand their skills and keep up with current technology by taking additional industry-sponsored courses. Future career path opportunities include jobs as estimators, inspectors, distribution managers, project managers, trade instructors, and foreman.

Instruction
Schooling for HVAC is taught at:
  • Madison Area Technical College—Madison
  • Northeast Wisconsin Technical College—Green Bay
  • Chippewa Valley Technical College—Eau Claire (block class).

The block class in Eau Claire allows apprentices from the entire state to attend, classes are usually held for a full week in January, February, and March.

Application Requirements

  • Accuplacer test with a score of 66 or higher on Reading Comprehension and 66 or higher on Arithmetic, and 33 or higher on Algebra
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Copy of Driver’s License (or means to get to work)
  • Apprenticeship Application
  • Sponsoring Employer Application (if sponsored)
  • Supplemental Information Form
