ABC VP talks workforce development on Rural Wisconsin Initiative podcast

ABC of Wisconsin Vice President Kelly Tourdot was featured on the inaugural edition of “RuralCast” – a podcast created by the Rural Wisconsin Initiative – to discuss apprenticeships and workforce development opportunities in rural areas of the state. The Rural Wisconsin Initiative was created in 2016 by rural legislators to explore bipartisan policy solutions related to the challenges rural areas face in education, health care, workforce development and technology. Developing your talent pipeline through youth apprenticeship

Labor shortage stories seem to cover the front page of newspapers daily. Employers across diverse industries, including construction, healthcare, information technology, manufacturing and transportation report increasing difficulty attracting and retaining enough skilled workers to meet the demand for their products and services. For example, Wisconsin's short-term projections for construction laborers indicate that nearly 2,200 openings will occur annually through 2019, including new openings and replacements. Long-term projections show a similar picture with 540 construction laborer openings created annually through 2024.

The Department of Workforce Development (DWD) has been working with many public and private sector partners to devise and deploy strategies to help employers meet their needs for skilled workers. The Wisconsin Youth Apprenticeship (YA) program is one of the rapidly growing strategies that is gaining popularity among ABC members. Read the rest of entry »

Why we make a big deal of apprenticeship graduations

The atmosphere was very festive as the Associated Builders and Contractors of Wisconsin recognized its apprentices during a recent Graduation Banquet. I’ve attended many commencement ceremonies over the past couple of decades, and none was more emotional than this one. With a record 500 graduates, family members, friends and instructors in attendance, it was the ABC of Wisconsin’s largest graduation banquet yet. Read the rest of entry »

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Wisconsin Apprenticeship is marking 30 years of service to the construction industry today. That's longer than most apprentices have been alive. If you were around during that time, you may recall the many obstacles and challenges ABC members faced getting the program started.
