Foreman Fundamentals is a course for those who are transitioning to a supervisory/managerial/leadership role in the construction industry. This course provides participants with knowledge they need to understand their new role and to start building their leadership skills.

Who should attend:   This introductory course has been designed for those with proven technical knowledge/skills who are new to or preparing for a role supervising or leading others. Titles of those who can benefit from the course include, but are not limited to Leadman, Assistant Crew Leader, Crew Leader, Foreman, and Supervisor.

Format

ABC of Wisconsin uses the GoToWebinar format for online classes. The series is $189 and consists of four, 2- hour live online modules that provides participants with the knowledge they need to build their supervisory skills. Once a person has registered and is approved, an invitation will be sent. Click on the link at the appropriate time and follow the prompts.

Before each module starts, a PDF of the workbook will be sent to download. Note: the workbook will be in an editable format, but we recommend you work from a hard copy if possible.

Outline:

  1. Challenges for the New Foreman – Monday, February 21, 2022, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm CDT/6:00 pm – 8:00 pm EDT. Every new position has unique challenges, especially in the construction industry. There are several common issues new leaders must face, including preparing for a new position, building a culture of effective leadership, and the fundamentals of goal setting.
  2. Crew Member to Crew Leader– Tuesday, February 22, 2022, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm CDT/6:00 pm – 8:00 pm EDT. Most advancements to supervisory positions are given to those who have shown proficiency in putting work in place efficiently. Supervisory leadership requires a completely different set of skills and typically comes with new responsibilities. We will discuss how leaders get things done through members of their team.
  3. The Working Foreman – Wednesday, February 23, 2022, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm CDT/6:00 pm – 8:00 pm EDT. What does a successful transition look like? Often the first step is to be a working foreman who still works with the tools or an assistant crew leader, with a small crew. We will discuss what the expectations are for this type of position and ways of progressively increasing your percentage of leadership duties.
  4. The New Leader – Thursday, February 24, 2022, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm CDT/6:00 pm – 8:00 pm EDT. What are the differences between management, supervision, and leadership? We will discuss the competencies required for all three of these aspects of a crew leader’s position. Also, what are typical construction costs? What can a field leader do to help control costs to meet projected budgets on a project?

    Mike has more than 40 years construction owner and manager experience. He has served on the ABC of Wisconsin Board of Directors and was instrumental in establishing the ABC Heavy Equipment Operator Apprenticeship program, having taught the program for several years. Currently, Mike teaches several construction leadership and management courses for ABC Wisconsin. He travels the United States and Canada teaching construction professionals and sharing a lifetime of “real experiences” in and personal enthusiasm for construction. Mike is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a degree in Business Management.
