Midwest Refrigerated Services Brown Deer Road Target Building Adaptive Reuse
Brown Deer, WI
Consolidated Construction Co., Inc.
Owner: Alliance Development Corp (Midwest Refrigerated Services)
Designer: Consolidated Construction Co. Inc.
Consolidated Construction Company completed this complex adaptive reuse of a former Target store into a refrigeration facility in a transitional area on Milwaukee’s far northwest side. The new Midwest Refrigerated Services facility is comprised of 122,700 total square feet featuring an industrial cooler, office and training area and trucker’s lounge. It is highly unusual to repurpose an existing structure like this to house a cooler box within the original building footprint. Consolidated completely gutted the building down to its bones. The refurbishing effort required the installation of substantial aluminum store front, glazing, metal canopie and exterior EIFS and paint finishes to achieve the vision of the Owner and architect, a modern shipping container’ motif. It was completed in five months with an average of $1 million in construction performed each month; a remarkable feat for an adaptive reuse project. It was executed with zero injuries/safety-related incidents.
