This project was the third floor renovation of Milwaukee’s Heralded Historic City Hall, built in 1895. The old design presented unique challenges in providing appropriate fire resistance ratings to archaic hollow clay brick and plaster metal lath fire protection systems from the era, while conforming to modern building fire codes. A 1:2 sand mix with redtop gypsum plaster was formulated into a gypsum net. Mineral wool, in conjunction with channel and lath, was used to restore the hollow clay tile and the plaster neat was applied over the surface to finish the application. The project was finished off with high-tech firestop penetration and joint treatments.
