The Olbrich Gardens Expansion project by Joe Daniels Construction Co. replaced the original 1992 greenhouse and added an 8,500 square foot, two-story learning center. It includes a state-of-the-art audio and visual system for early childhood to adult learning. The LEED Platinum Certified project was constructed while the gardens remained open to the public. The 2019 Polar Vortex and huge rainfalls in the spring created site challenges. Several materials were recycled from the original greenhouse, including metal, glass and plastics. A 60,000-gallon cistern was built into the learning center foundation to collect and filter rainwater, which can be pumped into a water heater powered by solar panels and used on plants. Many other energy-reducing features were installed, including nine kW photovoltaic solar panels on the roof and LED lighting throughout the facility. The contracting team worked in coordination with the many community partners during construction.
