The DeBot Dining Center Addition and Renovation is a nearly 57,000-square-foot project featuring unique hexagon penthouse ceilings, custom bench seating and live-edge slab tables. Ellis Construction shepherded the project through more than 150 change orders that were derived from plan updates and revisions. Due to accessibility constraints, existing structural steel was removed by hand and new steel was installed the same way. The structural steel was far from straightforward because of the unique design. It required attention to detail and extensive welding. The penthouse ceilings took a considerable amount of attention to detail to make sure they were architecturally sound as well as aesthetically pleasing. Several of the hexagonal pieces needed to be hand set for the shear size and special constraints with chain falls and electric winches. Each unique feature took careful design efforts to reach the highest quality and timing.
