Midwest Refrigerated Services Cold Storage & Logistics Facility

This facility stands 45 feet tall, with nearly 85% of its 192,000 sq. ft. footprint dedicated to USDA- and FDA-approved, food grade cold storage. It’s the first building on a new business campus designed to grow with demand, designed by long-time partners Midwest Refrigerated Services and Consolidated Construction Co., Inc. Extensive sitework transformed 83 acres of wet farmland into this new campus, while sustainability and innovative systems, including industry-forward refrigeration and robotic automation, ensure long-term flexibility for the company. As design advanced in parallel with sitework to meet the non-negotiable timeline, a synergistic rhythm emerged, keeping crews in lockstep and shoulder to shoulder, tackling overlapping activities with resourcefulness and respect for the aggressive schedule. The project demanded careful coordination, from permitting to sitework to overlapping installations, yet the team overcame every challenge—inside and out— maintaining momentum and completing one week early and under budget by $1.6 million. While cold storage facilities are usually more functional than elegant, this one redefines standards by putting people and sustainability at the forefront. From sunlit offices and meeting spaces to a café-style breakroom, and plans for an on-site healthcare clinic, the design reflects a facility uniquely human-centered in a field that often isn’t.
