About the Project

The Berkshire at the Grove Apartments and Townhomes, a historic rehab project in Stevens Point, is a shining example of how a historic building can be transformed into a vibrant living community. The two-year renovation involved restoration, reusing, and repurposing of the existing infrastructure of a former convent while upgrading its design. The development took place in four distinct sections of the 160,000 sq ft convent building which were transformed into senior-specific housing, mixed-housing for Workforce Development Housing, a community Create Space center and a commercial kitchen to support a non-profit’s food distribution programs. The chapel section has been transformed into a performance area and will serve as the centerpiece of the community center. One of the standout features of the renovation is the retention and restoration of the building’s original architecture. The existing hardwood flooring, cabinetry, millwork and terrazzo floors were reused and refinished to maintain the building’s historic character while giving it a new fresh look. The restoration of metal ceilings, refinished stairwells with original historic elements and the implementation of Wi-Fi throughout the building are just a few aspects that give a glimpse into the level of detail that went into the renovation of this building.
