The goal of the historic restoration of the Post Crescent building in Appleton was to convert a piece of history into housing. Northcentral Construction built a new, 34-unit addition on a congested site in a busy downtown area. This required just-in-time deliveries, creative space utilization and constant coordination and communication. The first step in the project was to abate a large amount of asbestos-containing products and remediate lead-based paint. Excavation for the addition required sloping to within 12 inches of the street and stabilizing the surface to prevent damage to the road. Throughout construction, workers used lifts on the streets, which required traffic control and safety measures. The team had to overcome many variations on floor levels in a manner that allowed the residents to still function in their homes. Northcentral overcame daily hurdles and weekly challenges, all while avoiding project delays and limiting cost impacts.
