Corporate Contractors, Inc. (CCI) was hired with architect Angus Young to design and construct an ideal shelter for the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin (HSSW) on a 44-acre site. Delaying complications arose, such as HSSW leadership changes, a pandemic, and a complete redesign forced by a national steel shortage and rising costs. While trusses were found with a shorter delivery window, a complete redesign was needed to avoid significant delays. Using communication, teamwork, and expertise, the result is a right-sized $3.7 million, single-story, 16,500-square-foot, animal-focused and community-minded shelter. The thoughtful facility design can easily accommodate a future expansion with little or no impact on daily operations. The large kennels have indoor/outdoor access and a play yard. There are five meet-and-greet social rooms, two exam rooms with ultrasound and x-ray equipment, recovery rooms, an ICU, community/multipurpose rooms, and a standalone 4,800-square foot cold storage metal building.
