Merit Shop is for Everyone: Resources to Build an Inclusive Team

Growing a merit-based workforce means recruiting and developing the best people to do the work on each job site. Merit shops are for everyone who wants to master their skills and perform on the team.

This month, as part of Construction Inclusion Week, the ABC Construction Inclusion Committee created several resources to help ABC members build more inclusive workplaces. They are all posted on the ABC website, and include links to videos, tool box talks, community resources and more to help your company build a successful and inclusive workforce. The key areas include:

The Power of Language Access: In Wisconsin, residents speak over 140 languages. Eugene Krol of K Komfort, Inc. explains how his company integrates members who speak different languages, and encourages companies to consider the business benefits, including being able to serve more diverse customers.

Building the Future by Recruiting through Workforce Pipelines: Various community based organizations and job centers provide valuable pipelines for employment. ABC’s Elizabeth Roddy explains the benefits of connecting with these groups, and expanding recruiting opportunities.

Bridging the Gap: Generational and Cultural Diversity at Work: Tony Zignego and Jose Rodriguez from Zignego Company explain techniques to help employees communicate and work well together.

Total Human Health & Mental Wellbeing: Nicole Frank of Dave Jones, Inc., discusses how mental health affects performance, and provides key resources to strengthen your team.

Beyond Compliance and Towards True Inclusion: Josh Levy of Husch Blackwell (and ABC Board Member) and Leah Kallas of Great Lakes Skilled Trades explain some of the unique requirements in Madison and Milwaukee, and talk about the shared goals of building a robust workforce.

All employers should strive for a diverse culture that rewards team members for their readiness, skill and ability to contribute. ABC is proud to partner with member companies to cultivate cultures of high performance, inclusion, safety and success.
